There is one carrier which can carry more than 50 aircraft and its weapons systems include Granit anti-ship cruise missiles. plus two large anti-submarine warships and four support vessels. MiG-29 Fulcrum jets and combat helicopters were visible on the carrier's deck.

It turns out it it was even bigger, because according to a NATO diplomat cited by Reuters, Russia is "deploying all of the Northern fleet and much of the Baltic fleet in the largest surface deployment since the end of the Cold War,"

The Russians “moved from the brakes to the gas pedal.” There is a new dream in Moscow which did not exist until  the present direct and existential confrontation with the U.S. that Russia will be understood to be not just a great power but the new superpower with global interests. 

The U.S.-Russia confrontation over Ukraine and now Syria is far more dangerous than is understood by mainstream U.S. analysts as Russia lays down clear warnings that are mostly being ignored, writes Gilbert Doctorow.

He explained that Russian military are in settled areas across Syria performing humanitarian work and dealing with local Syrian militia who are laying down their arms under Russian-brokered deals. Therefore, any U.S. air strikes in Syria will likely also hit Russian forces, which is utterly unacceptable.

Kiselyov noted, the Russians “moved from the brakes to the gas pedal.” They dispatched three missile bearing naval vessels from the Black Sea fleet to the Eastern Mediterranean as a back-up in case the U.S. proceeds on Plan B. These are equipped with two types of missiles: the Kalibr cruise missile which may be nuclear tipped and has a 2,600 kilometer range for striking ground targets plus the supersonicOniks for attacking ships.

The end result of the official silence in the U.S. about Russia’s message of defiance and about its military wherewithal in place in Syria to defend what it construes as its national interest is that we could see the start of ww3 before jan 1 2017

Iran and Russia flexing military muscle in Syria

The Syrian crisis is now in its sixth year with no end in sight.

Iran's illegal arms shipments, ballistic missile tests, and "destabilizing acts" along with the deployment of Russian artillery in support of government forces preparing for an offensive south of Aleppo seem to support that the fighting will continue and be ready to heat up again

The Kremlin said Vladimir Putin has expressed concern at the crisis in the peace process so the Russians are deploying more artillery to support government forces preparing them for an offensive south of Aleppo.

the stage seems set for a further escalation of conflict. The US has been hinting at a “plan B” while the Saudis, Qatar and Turkey will boost arms deliveries to rebels units they support. While Russia and Iran would be likely to step up their military aid to Assad.

Iran has ability to conduct expeditionary operation in Syria

 New deployment shows that Iran’s ability to conduct expeditionary operations in the region is likely far greater than previously believed.

Iran is rotating forces in and out of Syria, bolstering pro-Assad militia units and likely beefing up Tehran’s ability to project military force abroad. These developments deserve close scrutiny rather than optimistic misinterpretation if we hope to keep a very bad situation in the Middle East from getting worse.

U.S. intelligence community is reporting about Iran’s “withdrawal,” even though Iran’s leaders have loudly said otherwise. If anything Tehran significantly escalated its involvement in Syria in October 2015 by creating a more aggressive model of support to pro-Assad forces. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) plugged brigade-sized cadre formations into an amalgam of Iraqi Shia militias, Hezbollah, and other pro-regime militias in order to integrate and lead these proxy forces.

Syria, Russia, US - say peace, but its the calm before the storm

Despite claims of peace, the international transfer of weapons to the Middle East is rising dramatically. Analysts say the middle eastern kingdom overtook India, and along with the United Arab Emirates it imported more defense supplies than all of Europe.

Russian firepower has made Mr Assad more secure and his US supported armed opposition weaker. Assad said it would halt "combat operations" in line with the peace plan (truce / cease fire) announced by the US and Russia. But the opposition said its acceptance depended on Assad government forces ending sieges and air strikes of civilians.

Bashar al-Zoubi of the Yarmouk Army and Rebel commanders expressed doubts about this newest cease fire accord, saying it only provides cover for Assad government forces and Russian aircraft to continue attacking opposition-held areas. They say the Russian regime will use the excuse of fighting terrorism to openly target areas held by the revolutionaries.

The rebel factions (al-Qaeda / US) say their committed to ending Syrian bloodshed but warned that the acceptance of the truce is conditional; saying all parties must end sieges, halt aerial and artillery attacks, and release detainees. The Syrian government (Assad/Russia) later called a halt to combat operations ( but continued airstrikes???)

Russia - Syria will trigger WW3

We are very rapidly approaching a conflict the likes of which the world has not seen since the 1940's and this one is highly likely to go nuclear very early.  Tactical (Battlefield) nukes absolutely, positively, WILL be used.  There is no avoiding it.

Syria has always been a military ally of Russia.  Russia has a deep water port in Syria which is important to the Russian Navy.  When it became clear to Russia that Syria was going to fall to the Rebels backed by america, Russia announced they were coming to the aid of their ally, at the request of Syria and with its permission.

Saving Assad is emerging as a key facet of Russia’s Middle East strategy. By propping up one of the region’s most vilified leaders, Moscow is sending a powerful message about its willingness to act aggressively in a region where many of America’s closest allies are feeling insecure — and questioning Washington’s commitment to have their backs in the future.
